PS Plus subscription required to play online games with PS4 ...

Plus-E3-2013

I?ve just returned to my hotel from the most entertaining conference I?ve ever seen, and there is not much bad that came from it. Not even this morsel of news whereby online gaming on PlayStation 4 requires a PS Plus subscription, as Xbox 360 requires an Xbox Live Gold subscription.

While the details of this fact were stepped over carefully during Jack Tretton?s stage presence tonight so as not to disrupt the momentum of good selling points, comparison?s between the rival services can now be made at a level playing field. ?PS+ is not required for playing PS3 games online and instead was there to offer gamers access to hundreds of dollars in great games across PS3, Playstation Network, and PS Vita for just $50.

This holiday season, anyone with a Plus subscription can add PS4 to that list with the bonus of ?having access to the online features of their games. Without Plus means no online gameplay. Although, without Plus means everything else about your PlayStation experience remains unchanged. All video services and Music Unlimited remain accessible unlike on Xbox Live without Gold.

Again, having Plus has always had the primary perk of free games by way of the Instant Game Collection for PS3 and Vita. With PS4?s launch we?ll see a special PS Plus edition of DriveClub hit PSN for free with that Plus subscription. Additionally, three of the six or so indie games announced as exclusives to PS4 will be free with Plus. These include Don?t Starve, Secret Ponchos and Outlast.
