Volunteers help promote youth fishing ? Outdoor News Daily

The ?2012 Outdoor Recreation Participation Report? indicated that 46.2 million Americans fished in 2011. Approximately 18 percent of youths (6 to 24 years old) and 16 percent of adults enjoyed wetting a line ? making recreational fishing the most popular ?gateway activity? in the country. The Outdoor Foundation defines gateway activities as those that often lead to other outdoor participation.

What makes that important is the knowledge that active, nature-based recreation leads to happier, healthier and more productive lifestyles (see GetOutdoorsFlorida.org; neefusa.org/health). Moreover, the future of Florida?s environment and recreational activities such as fishing, hunting, wildlife viewing and camping are interwoven with people?s personal passion for nature. David Sobel, author of ?Childhood and Nature,? expressed this thought as, ?If we want children to flourish, to become truly empowered, then let us allow them to love the earth before we ask them to save it.?

The Sunshine State is fortunate to have numerous dedicated individuals who want to share their love for nature and outdoor recreation and are committed to ?Creating the Next Generation That Cares?,? which is the tagline for the Florida Youth Conservation Centers Network (FYCCN.org). That tagline is a rallying cry to establish a statewide network of conservation centers designed to encourage and empower kids to participate in traditional outdoor recreation and stewardship.

Ultimately, it comes down to dedicated individuals, with a passion for teaching kids about recreational fishing and conservation. This column focuses on a few stellar examples, but they are by no means the only such employees, volunteers and friends of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) who are helping create the next generation of anglers.

The Jacksonville Youth Summer Fishing Clinic Program began in 1993 under the guidance of biologists for the Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission (now part of the FWC). Federal Aid in Sport Fish Restoration (SFR), which uses funds from fees on the sale of fishing tackle and motor boat fuels collected by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, paid for the initial program. Within a few years, the American League of Anglers and Boaters recognized the Jacksonville Urban Fisheries Project as the best SFR project in the country.

In 1997, Mike Lesso, a health and physical education teacher at a Jacksonville-area high school, was hired to conduct summer fishing clinics. In 1999, another instructor, Dave Morse was added. The program quickly expanded and became one of the most sought-after summer activities for local summer camp programs for 8- to 15-year-olds. Lesso and Morse provide a three-hour clinic that begins with instruction about fish identification and biology, pond ecology, recreational fishing rules, ethics and safety. Next, they teach knot tying, pole rigging and casting. The last 90 minutes are for hands-on fishing ? quite naturally, the highlight for the kids, many of whom have never fished before.

They conduct most of the clinics, which begin in June and run through the second week of August, on Huguenot Pond or Crystal Spring fish management areas (FMAs). FWC biologists intensively manage these FMAs to provide local anglers and camp participants with exceptional opportunities for productive bank fishing.

In 2007, budget shortfalls threatened the program; however, Lesso and Morse were determined to keep the camps open and helped secure two major grants. Lara Kramer, chief executive officer of the Fish Florida Foundation, and her board have been instrumental in keeping the program going. The Fish Florida Foundation is funded by the sale of ?Fish Florida? specialty license tags that feature a beautiful sailfish. The Baldwin Foundation also supports the fish camp program. The FWC continues to supply materials and equipment to support the program.

These dedicated instructors do all the coordination work and teach hundreds of kids each week through this program. Lesso and Morse have instructed more than 60,000 kids and are outstanding examples of the dedicated staff and volunteers committed to ensuring Florida youth have the opportunity to learn and enjoy fishing. They are far from alone.

The FWC?s Division of Freshwater Fisheries Management now coordinates week-long summer fish camps at 15 locations around the state that will host 44 sessions this summer and directly reach about 650 students. The camps are fun and informative for kids who enjoy the outdoors, teaching them angling and boating skills, as well as introducing them to conservation stewardship and the possibilities of a future career.

In addition, many other instructors were taught by FWC staff and sponsor their own fish camps. Many of these camps are affiliated with the FWC effort to create the next generation that cares and to help sustain Florida?s fisheries and other natural resources. Florida Youth Conservation Centers Network programs go beyond freshwater fishing and include saltwater fishing, shooting sports, wildlife viewing and boating. Visit FYCCN.org to learn more or participate, and check out the volunteer website at MyFWC.com/Get-Involved.

U.S. issues global travel alert over al-Qaida threat

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The United States has issued a global travel alert because of an al-Qaida terrorist threat.

The State Department says the potential for terrorism is particularly strong in the Middle East and North Africa. It says an attack could occur or come from the Arabian Peninsula.

The department says in a statement that al-Qaida and its affiliated organizations "continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond."

The travel alert comes a day after the U.S. announced that it would shutter its embassies and consulates throughout the Muslim world on Sunday, and possibly longer.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

The United States is closing its embassies and consulates throughout the Muslim world on Sunday after receiving an unspecified threat, officials said.

The threat was linked to al-Qaida and focused on the Middle East and Central Asia, said Rep. Ed Royce, R-Calif., chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

State Department officials said Thursday they were acting out of an "abundance of caution."

Spokeswoman Marie Harf cited information indicating a threat to U.S. facilities overseas and said some diplomatic facilities may stay closed for more than a day.

Sunday is a workday in the Muslim world. American diplomatic missions in Europe, Latin America and many other places are closed on Sunday.

Royce said Friday he supported the State Department decision to "protect our personnel on the ground."

The State Department issued a major warning last year informing American diplomatic facilities across the Muslim world about potential violence connected to the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Dozens of American installations were besieged by protests over an anti-Islam video made by an American resident.

In Benghazi, Libya, the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans were killed when militants assaulted a diplomatic post. The administration no longer says that attack was related to the demonstrations.

Bulgarian President Vows Justice after Deadly Coal Mine Collapse

Bulgarian president Rosen Plevneliev has assured that the officials responsible for the tragic incident in the collapsed Oranovo coal mine in Southwestern Bulgaria, will be brought to justice.

?I believe that the ones liable for the tragedy in the coal mine ?Oranovo? will be held responsible?, the Bulgarian president told reporters.

?I believe that the investigation undertaken will resolve the reasons for the accident and if it is found out that the reasons are absence of adequate control and poor safety standards, the officials liable for that will be held responsible?, assured the president Plevneliev.

The president emphasized his admiration for the actions of the rescue teams who rendered aid to victims of the accident.

?They turned out to be an extraordinary example of commitment and heroism and they got the appreciation and the respect from the whole country?, he said.

The president expressed his condolences for the victims.

On July 16, a fatal collapse at the mine Oranovo killed 2 miners (Asen Stoynev, 41, and Hristo Mladenov, 45) and left 2 others (Ivan Lazarov, 35, and Nikolay Mihaylov, 42) trapped 450 meters below the surface underneath an avalanche of mud, rocks and water.

The dead bodies of Lazarov and Mihaylov were discovered Friday morning after an 18-day search.

On Thursday, one miner passed away inside the mine from a heart attack.

The deadly rockfall on July 16 was the fourth major accident in eight years at the mine.
The mine is located about 2 km from the town of Simitli, which declared 3-day mourning.

Singer Selena Gomez tops Billboard album chart for first time

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - American pop singer Selena Gomez topped the Billboard 200 album chart for the first time on Wednesday, besting rapper Jay-Z and the soundtrack to "Teen Beach Movie."

Backed by her hit single "Come & Get It," 21-year-old Gomez's fourth studio album, "Stars Dance," sold 97,000 in the past week, according to figures compiled by Nielsen SoundScan.

Jay-Z, whose album "Magna Carta Holy Grail" topped the chart for two weeks, fell to No. 2, selling 77,000 copies.

The soundtrack to "Teen Beach Movie," a Disney Channel film, rose to No. 3 from No. 8 with 57,000 in sales during the week.

Walt Disney Co's Disney Music Group labels Walt Disney Records and Hollywood Records released "Teen Beach Movie" and Gomez's "Stars Dance," respectively.

Compilation album "Kidz Bop 24" of children singing pop hits fell one spot to No. 4, selling 39,000 copies, and Latin pop singer Marc Anthony's Spanish-language album "3.0" debuted at No. 5, selling slightly fewer than 39,000 copies.

Anthony's album is the highest-selling opening week for a Spanish-language album since 2011, Billboard said.

Other debut albums to break into the top 10 are "Tracing Back Roots" by rock group We Came as Romans at No. 8 and "Rich Gang," a compilation from the rap labels Young Money Entertainment and Cash Money Records, at No. 9.

Overall album sales for the week ending July 28 totaled $4.68 million units according to Billboard, down 4 percent from the same week in 2012.

Video: Syracuse football coach Scott Shafer's 'hard-nosed' remix

Syracuse football coach Scott Shafer loves the word "hard-nosed."

In his first news conference as SU's new head coach in January, he called Central New Yorkers "hard-nosed people" and promised the fans he'd have a "hard-nosed team" for a "hard-nosed town." He used the word "hard-nosed" seven times in less than 30 minutes.

Katrina Tulloch and Geoff Herbert from The Post-Standard and syracuse.com entertainment team gave Shafer's favorite word a little bit of autotune to make a #Hardnosed remix of his unforgettable speech.

Watch, enjoy, share and then watch again. And then get excited for the "hard-nosed" SU football team's debut season in the ACC, which kicks off Aug. 31 against Penn State.

Snowden's father says willing to fly to Moscow on FBI request

MOSCOW (Reuters) - The father of former U.S. spy agency contractor Edward Snowden said on Wednesday he was willing to agree to a request by the FBI to fly to Moscow to see his son, but first needed to know what the security services wanted.

Lonnie Snowden told state-owned Russian 24 television the FBI had suggested a "few weeks ago" that he should travel to Moscow to talk to his son, who faces espionage charges in the United States for exposing secret U.S. surveillance programs.

Edward Snowden, whose exposure of the surveillance raised questions about intrusion into private lives, has been stuck in the transit zone of Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport since arriving from Hong Kong more than a month ago.

His father has had no direct contact with him.

"I received this suggestion (from the FBI to travel to Moscow) a few weeks ago, and I have yet to decline it," Lonnie Snowden said, his English translated into Russian. He added that he would first like to know what the FBI wanted him to do.

He said he believed his 30-year-old son, who has applied for temporary asylum in Russia after the cancellation of his travel documents meant he was unable to travel on to a preferred destination in Latin America, was better off in Moscow.

"If he wants to spend the rest of his life in Russia, I would agree. I am not against it," he said. "If I were in his place, I would stay in Russia, and I hope that Russia will accept him."

Lonnie Snowden again said he did not think his son would get a fair trial in the United States because of "what happened in the last 5-6 weeks".

"I hope that he will return home and appear in court ... But I don't expect that ... a court would be fair. We cannot guarantee a fair court."

The Russian lawyer helping Edward Snowden, Anatoly Kucherena, told the program he thought his asylum request would be granted "in the coming days", and that the United States had failed to send an official extradition request.

"If you want (to have Snowden handed over), you should adhere to the law, so send, according to existing rules of cooperation between states, a corresponding legal document, correctly filled out. But there is no such thing," said Kucherena, a lawyer who is close to the Kremlin.

"Just saying 'hand him over' is absolutely dishonorable and incorrect."

El Reno stockyard auctions return after tornado

BY CARMEN FORMAN cforman@opubco.com ? Modified: July 31, 2013 at 4:00 pm ? Published: July 30, 2013

Thunder rumbling, rain pinging against the metal building and sporadic power outages at Monday's OKC West Stockyards cattle auction, were eerily reminiscent of May 31, but this time there was no tornado.

Monday's auction was the second since the business was destroyed in the EF5 tornado, said Bill Barnhart, OKC West managing partner.

The auction house opened in 1989 and takes cattle on consignment and cleans, sorts and sells them.

Thirteen people and 160 cows were on the property when the tornado came rolling through. All humans and cows survived, but the business' four buildings were demolished.

?Good Lord ordered a remodel, so we're going to remodel,? Barnhart said.

Barnhart also decided to make some improvements.

Since his employees had to find creative hiding places from the storm such as under a stairwell in the restaurant or under the cow-weighing machine, Barnhart decided to install a storm shelter in the new arena, employee Sonny Barthold said.

Improvements also included newer camera equipment to film proceedings for the online audience. The auctions are posted on the Internet in a live-stream so people at home or at work can bid on cattle.

?Bill took this on like a war and he won this war,? Barthold said. ?If you've got to go to battle, you want him on your side.?

Two of the four buildings at OKC West have been rebuilt. It was essential to rebuild the arena and feed barn in order to get back to business, Barnhart said. Until the office building and truck wash are rebuilt, offices have been temporarily moved to the back of the arena.

A scientific controversy erupted this week over claims that methane trapped beneath the Arctic Ocean could suddenly escape, releasing huge quantities of methane, a greenhouse gas, in coming decades, with a huge cost to the global economy.

The issue being debated is this: Could the Arctic seafloor really fart out 50 billion tons of methane in the next few decades? In a commentary published in the journal Nature on Wednesday (July 24), researchers predicted that the rapid shrinking of Arctic sea ice would warm the Arctic Ocean, thawing permafrost beneath the East Siberian Sea and releasing methane gas trapped in the sediments. The big methane belch would come with a $60 trillion price tag, due to intensified global warming from the added methane in the atmosphere, the authors said.

But climate scientists and experts on methane hydrates, the compound that contains the methane, quickly shot down the methane-release scenario.

"The paper says that their scenario is 'likely.' I strongly disagree," said Gavin Schmidt, a climate scientist at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York.

An unlikely scenario

One line of evidence Schmidt cites comes from ice core records, which include two warm Arctic periods that occurred 8,000 and 125,000 years ago, he said. There is strong evidence that summer sea ice was?reduced during these periods, and so the methane-release mechanism?(reduced sea ice causes sea floor?warming and hydrate melting) could have happened then, too. But there's no methane pulse in ice cores from either warm period, Schmidt said. "It might be a small thing that we can't detect, but if it was large enough to have a big climate impact, we would see it," Schmidt told LiveScience.

David Archer, a climate scientist at the University of Chicago, said no one has yet proposed a mechanism to quickly release large quantities of methane gas from seafloor sediments into the atmosphere. "It has to be released within a few years to have much impact on climate, but the mechanisms for release operate on time scales of centuries and longer," Archer said in an email interview.

Methane has a lifetime of about 10 years in the atmosphere before it starts breaking down into other compounds. [What are Greenhouse Gases?]

Defending new model

Today (July 26), Peter Wadhams, a co-author of the Nature commentary, defended the work against critics in an essay posted online.

"The mechanism which is causing the observed mass of rising methane plumes in the East Siberian Sea is itself unprecedented, and the scientists who dismissed the idea of extensive methane release in earlier research were simply not aware of the new mechanism that is causing it," wrote Wadhams, an oceanographer at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.

"But once the ice disappears, as it has done, the temperature of the water can rise significantly, and the heat content reaching the seabed can melt the frozen sediments at a rate that was never before possible," Wadhams added. "David Archer's 2010 comment that 'so far no one has seen or proposed a mechanism to make that (a catastrophic methane release) happen' was not informed by the ... mechanism described above. Carolyn Ruppel's review of 2011 equally does not reflect awareness of this new mechanism," Wadhams wrote.

But Ruppel, a methane hydrate expert at the U.S. Geological Survey who authored a review of research on gas hydrates in 2011, also called the sudden-thawing scenario unrealistic.

"I would say it's nearly impossible," Ruppel, chief of the USGS Gas Hydrates Project in Woods Holes, Mass., told LiveScience.

Methane: microbial or hydrate?

Much of the Arctic's methane sits in permafrost buried under hundreds of meters of seafloor sediments, Ruppel said. The deposits formed on exposed ground during the last Ice Age, when sea levels were lower. The rising seas have been warming the deposits for millennia. Any added warming will have to work down through the thick sediment cap.

Much of the modeling predictions in the Nature commentary were based on recent discoveries of rising methane plumes in the East Siberian Sea. However, those plumes may be from methane hydrates or from microbes.

"Methane release in the Arctic from both marine and terrestrial sources is expected to increase with warming climate, as documented in numerous papers," Ruppel said. "Much of the methane may actually be produced in the shallow sediments by microbial processes and be completely unrelated to methane hydrates." ? ?

However, there has yet to be a detectable change in Arctic methane emissions in the atmosphere over the past two decades, Ed Dlugokencky, a research scientist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Earth System Research Laboratory, said in an email interview.

China arrests 18 more GlaxoSmithKline staff in corruption probe

Another 18 GlaxoSmithKline employees have been detained by Chinese authorities as a major criminal investigation into alleged corruption widens.

The British drugs giant is embroiled in a scandal which allegedly saw millions of euro in bribes paid to Chinese doctors and health officials to boost sales and raise prices.

Chinese state media said police have detained more GSK employees after four of the company?s senior executives were arrested in relation to the claims earlier this month.

A report also claimed the group faced similar allegations from a whistleblower as early as January, although the group has said it only became aware of the specific problems identified by Chinese police two weeks ago.

The Sunday Telegraph said an email from an anonymous whistleblower was sent to the GSK board, auditors and the UK's Serious Fraud Office in January, detailing similar claims to those now being investigated by Chinese police.

The email alleged money was transferred into ?almost every? new GSK sales employee?s personal bank account to pay cash bribes to doctors to prescribe drugs.

GSK today said it ?thoroughly investigated? the whistleblower?s allegations earlier this year.

A spokesman said: ?These investigations did not support the specific allegations being made by the whistleblower.

?We understand that the allegations made by the Chinese authorities in the ongoing investigation are different and separate to the whistleblower?s particular allegations.

GSK boss Andrew Witty last week described the recent corruption allegations as ?shameful? and ?deeply disappointing?.

But he sought to blame a handful of senior managers for the scandal, saying bosses at the pharmaceuticals company?s London headquarters knew nothing of the alleged bribery.

He said: ?Just as we see in all large organisations, unfortunately there is a risk that individuals can sometimes do inappropriate things.

?I remain strongly of the view that 99.99% of the people in this organisation are absolutely operating in the appropriate way and understand not just the rules but the values the company stands by.?

Sir Andrew admitted the scandal will have an impact on the company?s performance in China.

It is claimed senior managers at GSK funnelled money through travel agencies for ?conference services?, with cash then kicked back to the managers and some of it used for bribes.

Sir Andrew said: ?It appears that certain senior executives in the China business have acted outside our processes and controls to both defraud the company and the Chinese health care system.

?To see these allegations about people working for GSK is shameful. For me personally they are deeply disappointing.?

GSK has said it is co-operating fully with Chinese authorities, and has hired an international law firm to conduct an independent review into what went wrong in China.

Senior VP Bob Mansfield removed from Apple's leadership page (updated)

Senior VP Bob Mansfield removed from Apple's leadership page

It could mean nothing, but it could mean everything. As of this morning, Bob Mansfield was still a senior vice president at one of the world's most iconic technology firms. As of now, his leadership bio is nowhere to be found on Apple's official web presence. If you'll recall, Mansfield has had an interesting couple of years at Apple. In June of 2012, he abruptly announced that he was retiring. A couple of weeks later, he publicly addressed mounting criticism regarding Apple's computers and their relationship with EPEAT, seemingly putting the kibosh on said retirement. A few weeks following that, Mansfield actually got a promotion, with his responsibilities growing once again during the executive shakeup of October 2012. It's unclear if someone accidentally deleted the profile of one of Apple's most important figureheads (read: unlikely), or if Mr. Mansfield truly has stepped aside, but we'll be reaching out to Apple in hopes of clarifying things.

Update: Reuters' Poornima Gupta is reporting that Mansfield is "no longer with Apple's executive team, but will remain at Apple working on special projects reporting to Tim Cook."

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) ? It?s been three months since the Parkland Community Garden opened and Councilwoman Attica Scott invited the community on its progression.

The goal is to encourage healthy living and eating by teaching people in urban neighborhoods how to grown their own fresh food.

?We live on Hazel Street, we?ve grown up in the Parkland community and just to see the revitalization going on and interested neighbors, it?s wonderful,? resident Mary Agnew said.

Now that the community garden has proven its success, volunteers are expanding it to add 6 new raised beds.

There are also talks of doing the same thing in the southwest part of district one.

ITT Educational's Q2 Earnings & Revs Lag

ITT Educational Services Inc's. (ESI) earnings of 89 cents per share in the second quarter of 2013 lagged the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 91 cents by 2.2%.? Earnings declined 54.6% from the year-ago earnings of $1.96 per share. The double-digit decline in revenues and margin contraction took a toll on the bottom line.

Quarterly revenues totaled $259.9 million, down 21.2% from the prior-year quarter due to weak total enrollments. Total revenue also lagged the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $274 million by 5.2%. ?

ITT Educational reported total enrollment of 58,617 students for the second quarter of 2013, down 11.7% year over year. However, new enrollments witnessed an increase of 7.5% to 16,883 students in the quarter.

New enrollment growth was driven by a double-digit increase in new enrollments in drafting and design, electronics engineering and network administration. New enrollment was also driven by growth in nursing programs and the bachelor program in project management.

New enrollments were further driven by a significant increase in scholarships compared to the prior year quarter, which led to greater conversion of student applications into new enrollment. NCAA penalizes Montana football program

The University of Montana was hit with NCAA sanctions on Friday for failing to monitor the football program under former coach Robin Pflugrad.

The findings of an NCAA investigation included improper booster benefits to players, bail money and free legal representation for two athletes, and complimentary meals, clothing, lodging and transportation.

The penalties, most of which were self-imposed by the university, were a three-year probation, the loss of four scholarships in each of the next three seasons and vacating five wins because ineligible athletes played in those games. Two of the victories came in the FCS playoffs against Central Arkansas and Northern Iowa during an 11-3 season.

Pflugrad, who was fired in 2012 and currently serves as the offensive coordinator at Weber State, is suspended from coaching for the first game of the 2013 season. He also will be restricted in recruiting and required to attend an NCAA regional rules seminar next year.

The investigated focused on the October 2011 arrests of cornerback Trumaine Johnson and backup quarterback Gerald Kemp after police responded to complaints of a loud party.

The NCAA determined that a booster provided bail money for the two and an attorney gave them about $1,500 in free legal representation. Pflugrad failed to report the impermissible benefits to university officials and athletic director Jim O'Day also had knowledge of the improper benefits, the NCAA found.

The NCAA additionally uncovered evidence that boosters gave meals to at least eight athletes in the program on more than 100 occasions from 2004 through 2012 and that another player received free storage space for a month, transportation, clothing and a small cash loan.

The Smashing Pumpkins @ Wembley Arena, London

smashing pumpkins1 300x300?They don?t like it when I talk,? admits The?Smashing Pumpkins? baldy evil genius Billy Corgan during a mid-set interlude. ?I always get into trouble when I talk.? If that?s true it?s not in evidence tonight. There?s nothing of the wilfully antagonistic, indulgent Corgan the media like to present. Tonight?s set is about as crowd-pleasing as this band can actually get.

Last time Corgan?s mob were in town they played two hours straight of b-sides, unreleased material and album deep-cuts. Casual fans were baffled by a set that opened with two brand new songs and followed them up with all 10 minutes of 1992 b-side Starla. It was 40 minutes before they played a single, and when they did it was Siva, which hardly set the charts alight on its 1991 release. Mutters of ?self-indulgence? and the band having ?disappeared up their own arse? hit Twitter soon after.

Those who complained were missing the point. The Smashing Pumpkins have always done this, regardless of who was standing beside Corgan. Their ?classic? line up headlined the Reading Festival in 1995 with a set that was two thirds comprised of completely unreleased songs. The Pumpkins hardcore, the ones that have stuck with Corgan through his many regenerations, delight in this stuff ? the more obscure the better; the deeper the cut, the lengthier the redux, the more hungrily it?s devoured. If you don?t like 20 minute space-rock jams on forgotten album tracks, you don?t really like The Smashing Pumpkins. It?s just what they do.

Which is why tonight?s set is such a surprise. Tonight Corgan doesn?t just play his biggest hits, he actually opens with them. Tonight Tonight, probably the most sumptuous and accessible of their mid ?90s big guns, kicks of proceedings. It?s followed up by Cherub Rock, a brilliant cover of Space Oddity, the none-more-heavy XYU and the beautiful Disarm. It?s about as friendly an opening half hour as Corgan could possibly have played. It pays off, too. The Wembley Arena crowd, spoiled by such wanton treats, are now truly onside, allowing the band to slip into a suite of songs from the their recent return-to-form Oceania album. The tracks, backed by a kaleidoscopic barrage of psychedelic projections, are genuinely well received; there?s none of the restlessness you often sense in an arena crowd when an old band play new songs.

The latest Pumpkins line up, completed by long-serving guitarist Jeff Schroeder, bassist Nicole Fiorentino and drummer Mike Byrne, is the first properly gelling backline Corgan has had since about 1996, and it?s nowhere more apparent than in the newer material, especially the gorgeous, airy Pin Wheels. Slipped into the middle of the newies is 33, one of the gentler moments from the landmark Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness; this version of The Smashing Pumpkins manage to make it feel of a piece with the Oceania material; they?re not just playing an oldie, but reinterpreting it.

Corgan seems to enjoying himself too, joking about media whores, listing classic British bands ?Black Sabbath, Led Zepplin, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones? Wishbone Ash? and reminiscing about playing the Astoria. ?There?s a nice balance here between the commercial and the esoteric ? unusually, Corgan plays straight up-versions of nearly all of the band?s classic-era singles (Today, Bullet With Butterfly Wings, Zero, Ava Adore, Stand Inside Your Love), alongside a more typical lengthy prog-out on the metalcore United States, tonight?s only dip into the much-maligned Zeitgeist.

The audience won over, the night now their own, Corgan reverts to type in the encore. We get The Celestials, ?one of Oceania?s standouts, and rarely played since its release, and a final closing run through 1995?s Porcelina Of The Vast Oceans. It?s a blissful take on an archetypal Pumpkins epic, all quiet/loud dynamics, slow builds, mounting tension and explosive release. It?s a song that?s bobbed in and out of the bands set for nearly 20 years, and tonight is genuinely one of the best versions this writer has seen them do.

As the crowd filters out, having seen one of the most notoriously unpredictable and not-always reliable forces in music treat an audience to all-the-hits, treat the hardcore to fan favourites, and treat them all to the strongest new material he?s written in a decade, someone starts to grumble: ?I can?t believe they didn?t play 1979.? There?s no pleasing some people.

NOAA Goes Live With New Forecasting Supercomputers

I suspect if they removed the computers and installed windows in the offices of our local TV meteorologists we would get better short term forecasts. I've also decided that any precipitation forecast more than about 3-4 days out that doesn't involve a system as large as a hurricane is just a wild-ass guess*. Heck, even real time they're often wrong, the local guys are fond of reporting sunny all day while I'm actually looking outside at it raining.

*Well, unless you're in SoCal Mar-Dec, in which case "Sunny" is always the statistically correct answer, or Orlando/Daytona, where "It will rain at 3:45pm for 5 minutes" is always the statistically correct answer.

One of Malawi?s representatives to this year?s Big Brother Africa (BBA) The Chase Natasha Tonthola says she is nursing ambitions to contest, for the second time, for the parliamentary seat in one of the constituencies in eastern district of Balaka.

Malawi is expected to hold tripartite elections next year whose voter registration exercise in currently underway.

Tonthola,?who failed during the 2004 primary elections of ?United Democratic Front (UDF) , says her ambition is in no way connected to the new status she has gained after participating in the BBA.

?Some of you will be saying just because I have been to the BBA then I have the guts to eye a parliamentary seat. If you go back, you will see what am talking about, have been in politics and so this is just a continuation,? a local newspaper,?Daily Times?quotes her saying.

She says she hatched the plans to try again before she went into the house and now it?s time she would first go to the constituency she?didn?t?disclose and talk to the people there.

Tonthola ?also declined to mention the party she will contest for this time around but she was quick to say that as a woman her?role model and source of inspiration is the leader of the ruling People?s Party ?(PP) President Joyce Banda.

?As a woman, President Joyce Banda has showed that there is nothing which can stop us from contesting as leaders. We can go far as long as we have a vision and work hard,? she said.

She says since she come from a poor background??she wants to be doing charity work as well saying it was difficult for her to approach some organizations for help in the past??because she was not known,? she said.

Tonthola owns a restaurant in the capital Lilongwe and was more popular ?and trusted in the BBA house such that she was tasked to host Airtel Talk show where she was seen interviewing fellow housemates.

She will join a bandwagon of? other artists who are also vying for parliamentary seats in the next year?s elections among them musician Lawrence Mbenjere and Malawi Writers Union (Mawu) president Sambalikagwa Mvona.

Dewani to appeal extradition to South Africa

"Lawyers acting for Shrien Dewani will review today's [Wednesday] judgment and lodge an appeal during which time Shrien will remain in the UK," Dewani's family said in a statement after the ruling, said the British Press Association.

"Shrien Dewani remains unfit to be extradited or to face trial. Shrien remains committed to returning to South Africa when his health would permit a full trial and when appropriate protections are in place for his health and safety.

"The legal process is ongoing and it would be inappropriate to comment further," the statement reportedly read.

Chief Magistrate Howard Riddle made his ruling in the Westminster Magistrate's Court despite arguments by Dewani's defence team that he could suffer setbacks in his mental health if sent back now.

They wanted the decision delayed by six months. The 33-year-old British businessman had earlier been diagnosed with depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.

The courtroom was packed with murdered Anni Dewani's relatives, who wore photographs of her pinned to their clothes, decorated with pink ribbons.

Riddle said: "It is not in question that Shrien Dewani will be returned to South Africa. The treating clinicians continue to state that Mr Dewani will recover.

"There has been recovery, but it has been slow. It may be a long time before Mr Dewani is fit to plead, but he may be closer to that point.

"It is not impossible that if returned now, then after a reasonable period of further treatment and assessment he will be found fit to plead and a trial can take place."

Dewani has undergone treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder and depression since his wife's death.

Dewani is suspected of ordering the killing of his new wife Anni, 28, who was shot as the couple travelled in a taxi on the outskirts of Cape Town in November 2010.

So far three men have been convicted over Anni's death.

Last year, South African Xolile Mngeni was convicted of premeditated murder for shooting her, and was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Prosecutors claimed he was a hitman hired by Dewani to kill his wife, something that Dewani has consistently denied.

Taxi driver Zola Tongo was jailed for 18 years after he admitted his part in the killing, and another accomplice, Mziwamadoda Qwabe, also pleaded guilty to murder and was handed a 25-year prison sentence.

Riddle ruled in 2011 that Dewani should be extradited, but this was successfully appealed against and he was ordered to look again at the case.
