Apple files for iWatch patent in Japan

Apple filed for a trademark for "iWatch" in Japan ? signaling that the iWatch could be released by the end of 2014.

If the rumors are true, Apple's long-anticipated smartwatch may be drawing near, and it will look something like this: a sleek, thin band wrapped around your wrist with a bendable computer screen that vibrates gently to alert you to new messages or calls.

Apple took a concrete step toward making that fantasy a reality on June 3, when it filed for a trademark for ?iWatch? in Japan. The Japan Patent Office released information about the application on the office?s website on June 27, according to a Reuters?report. The patent would cover computers, computer accessories, and wristwatches.?

Apple has also filed for a patent in Russia, according to the Russian newspaper?Izvestia. No patent applications have been reported in Europe.?

Typically, patent applications preempt the release of a new product, and according to Apple-watchers, the iWatch should come out in late 2014.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has a proven track record of predicting Apple launch dates. ?He says that Apple?s March filings for patents relating to curved screens and batteries indicate that the company is working on a new, wearable product. In an Apple Insider report, ?Mr. Kuo predicts that watch will come with a biometric function, which will recognize its user. ?

Though no one is quite sure what an iWatch would look like, there are already several other smartwatch models on the market.?

Most notable among these is Pebble Watch, first released in January 2013 and funded by one of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns in history. The rectangular watch is controlled by four buttons on the side of the watch face and uses Bluetooth to forward information ? including app data ? from users? smartphones. The Pebble is compatible with both Apple and Andorid products, and the watch is water resistant for up to 165 feet? an added plus for athletes or the accident-prone.

Sony released a second version of its own SmartWatch last week that will be available for purchase in September. The new model is water-resistant, and has a slightly larger touch-screen than the first version, but Sony's watch can only receive Bluetooth signals from Android products.?

In March 2013, Toshiba released a prototype smartwatch with user-recognition capabilities. The watch has a built-in ECG sensor that recognizes the owner?s pulse and shuts down when another person tries to use anything other than the clock.?

A Google?wrist watch?is also in the works. ?

Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's could be better understood thanks to insight into proteins linked to such conditions, a study suggests.

Scientists studying thread-like chains of protein called amyloid fibres have found that low levels of these proteins may cause more harm to health than high levels.

These rarely formed protein chains, which have been linked with dozens of diseases, are produced as a result of a genetic flaw or changes in body chemistry brought about by ageing.

When this happens, short fibres are formed which become sticky and attract copies of themselves, forming an endless chain. These chains spontaneously break, creating more filament ends to which more proteins attach.

In the context of neurodegenerative diseases, it is these short, broken pieces that seem to be most harmful, scientists say.

Researchers have found that when protein levels are low, lots of short protein threads are formed. But when protein levels are high, this spontaneous breakage stops and most protein filaments remain long.

Compared with harmful short protein fibres, long fibres do not appear to be damaging in the case of neurodegenerative diseases. Researchers therefore believe that high levels of the protein which lead to these longer chains may actually be protective.

In addition to shedding light on disease, this insight into the protein chains may help scientists develop useful biomaterials, such as cell scaffolds, which are used for tissue engineering or to make artificial silk.

Cait MacPhee, Professor of Biological Physics at the University of Edinburgh's School of Physics and Astronomy, said; "We would expect that the higher the level of toxins, the worse the disease. However, in this study we found that the lower the level of the protein, the more of these damaging short fibres we see. Understanding how these protein chains form offers us insight not only into how diseases progress, but how we can produce controlled biomaterials for tissue engineering."

Can Google Really Crack The Game Console Market?

Look, we?ve all heard the rumors that Google is toiling away on a smartwatch, and the company has said the Nexus Q isn?t completely dead, so part of that recent report from the Wall Street Journal doesn?t completely out of the blue. That said, Google is reportedly also working on an Android-powered game console in response to murmurs of a similar Apple gaming push in the works.

Pretty ballsy, if you ask me.

We can?t know for sure how good Google?s intuition is when it comes to Apple?s gaming ambitions, but the folks in Cupertino are clearly looking at gaming with some level of interest ? iOS 7 includes improved support for game controllers, and was at one point rumored to be working on its own controller hardware.

As the past few weeks have illustrated nicely though, there?s plenty of jostling among established gaming companies as they attempt to lay claim to our living rooms, and yet Google apparently wants to throw itself headlong into the fray. In light of this potential hardware push, Google Play game services doesn?t just look like a shot across Apple Game Center?s bow ? it?s a way for developers to create Android games with that incorporate some of the features that console gamers have all but taken for granted at this point.

If this information pans out and Google does release an Android-powered console at some point in the near future, the company?s problem isn?t just the pressure it faces from entrenched players like Sony, Microsoft, and even Apple. The past year has seen plenty of upstart hardware companies attempting to shoehorn Android into tiny little packages with tiny price tags, and with varying levels of success.

One of those ambitious little doodads garnered more attention than the rest ? it?s damned near impossible to think the words ?Android game console? and not follow up with ?Ouya.? Hell, Amir Efrati?s WSJ report points out that Google has been paying particularly close attention to the Kickstarted startup, which guided its namesake device to a retail launch earlier this week after spending the past few months shipping pre-release versions to backers and developers. The Ouya temporarily sold out on Amazon, and it?s still backordered on Best Buy?s website ? not too shabby, considering its unabashedly geeky pedigree.

At this point it?s tough to say whether that?s a result of extreme demand for the $99 console or just limited supplies, but either way it seem as though a decent chunk of people have been waiting for this. That said, the company is awfully cagey on what it specifically hopes to get out of this retail push. During a recent chat CEO Julie Uhrmann wouldn?t disclose how many units would need to be sold at retail for her to consider the Ouya successful ? she instead responded with platitudes about how she wanted Ouya to be available to everyone to wanted one.

Uhrmann also said that she didn?t want anyone on the team even thinking of Ouya 2.0 until this current model has established a foothold in the market. It?s a curious thing to hear from the head of company that will probably live and die based on the strength of its annual hardware refreshes. The incentive is there to keep iterating and iterating and iterating until the Ouya succeeds ? is Google (or whatever hardware partners it may tap) prepared to do the same?

And all that said, early reactions of the Ouya have been a mixed bag. I?ve been fiddling with an Ouya myself for the past few days, and though a full review is forthcoming, my first impressions can essentially be summed up with a single syllable: meh. And the Ouya is just one example ? now there are GameSticks and Gamepops and MOJOs, to say nothing of a whole host of Shenzhen specials. Sony and Microsoft have the top-end well accounted for, and the race to the bottom for Android gaming in the living room has already begun.

So, when it comes down to it, can Google really crack the game console market? It?s possible, sure. Google may just be able to use its resources and developer clout to carve out a niche in a stupendously crowded gaming environment. It?s also worth noting that video game history is littered with the carcasses of dead, ill-conceived consoles, consoles that had great controllers, great games, and even net connectivity ahead of their time. The lesson to be learned from those dusty heaps of plastic is that (sadly) innovation is no guarantee of success, so Google is going to have to be terribly, terribly clever if it wants to have any lasting impact in our living rooms.

Bosnian Rainbows: Turtle Neck

Bosnian Rainbows is sort of an amalgam of band members from The Mars Volta and Le Butcherettes. They're definitely alternative rock and have a sort of No Doubt-from-Texas vibe (they formed in El Paso) with some Latin Roots. Their drummer Deantoni Parks definitely keeps things interesting, and there's kind of a ska feel, but without the brass. Or maybe that's just me. Oh, and they have "rainbows" in their name, which is a coincidence, but yay Pride!

Why I would rather live in Gaza than Egypt, my birthplace

The hell of Gaza is better that the paradise of Egypt: This could be hard to believe since Gaza has a reputation of being unsafe, but this is the conclusion I have reached after searching for a safer place to live with my wife and baby boy.

How could this be? Just two years ago, Egypt appeared to some to be on the cusp of an exciting democratic revolution, which would bring more power to the people and give them the freedom Arabs across the Middle East have been yearning for after half a century of Western-backed dictators.

Instead, on my nine visits since then, I have found the country so changed for the worse that I would rather live in a tiny coastal territory with no sovereignty, unemployment rates of more than 30 percent, and a government punished by Israel and the West, both of which consider the ruling Hamas movement to be a terrorist organization.

To be sure, I have faced frequent violence between Israel and Gaza militants, as well as hazards in my career as a journalist ? especially during military conflicts with Israel, such as the 2008-09 war and the 2012 Pillar of Defense operation.

And I thought I had found a way out.

In 2012, I got Egyptian citizenship, since I was born to an Egyptian mother and a Palestinian father. This, together with my desire for safety and stability, was a strong motive for me to move back to Egypt, where I was born and spent 14 years of my childhood, and where three sisters and my mother's family live.

I received more than half a dozen job offers from media outlets, and also had promising plans to start an education center to teach students English, math, science, and other subjects.

The salaries were not as high as what I receive in Gaza, but since I was looking for safety and stability, I did not care much about money. Things were rosy in my eyes, although many of my relatives and friends in Gaza criticized my decision because the economic and security situation in Egypt was not that good.

I did not believe them until last month.

I traveled to Egypt together with a coworker to receive a media course for TV journalists, which also drew journalists from Yemen, Libya, Iran, and China.

On the second of day of the course, we had a field training, in which we were to film a feature story about how the roadblocks placed by the police around government buildings negatively impacted the lives of both pedestrians and residents downtown.

While filming, we were in front of Tahrir Square, the birthplace of the Egyptian revolution. A Yemeni colleague was taking photos with his mobile phone of the place that means a lot for a Yemeni who demonstrated in Sanaa?s Change Square to topple a dictatorship.

As he was taking pictures, a teenager snatched the iPhone 4 from my colleague?s hand and walked away confidently. The Yemeni followed him and tried to stop him. To his surprise, the boy turned back with a knife in his hand and threatened that he will stab my colleague if he continues to ask for the phone.

We were nine guys and three women. We thought that we could help him if we all go out of the minibus and frighten the boy, but the boy went wild and started to scream.

A few seconds later, more than 20 of his peers came with knives and sticks and were about to attack us. An older guy riding a motorbike came and the boy jumped behind the biker and they sped off. No one even tried to stop and watch what was going on. At this very moment, our fear made us get into the minibus and drive away.

This was a turning point for me. After watching this, only one thing was on my mind, how could I live here? It's not the incident itself that made me change my mind to move to Egypt, but rather the passersby who were watching us being attacked and blackmailed by thugs at daytime. While Egyptians are known for being helpful, the spike in criminal activity has made many reluctant to intervene as they would have before the revolution.

Tahrir Square is one of the most crowded squares, if not the most, in Egypt. To have your cellphone stolen at daytime and in front of hundreds of watchers, one needs to think 100 times before deciding to settle in Egypt, but thank God, I only thought once and decided not endanger the lives of family in country that almost has no safety.

It's not that I've given up on Egypt forever. My love of Egypt is endless and priceless. It's my birthplace and the country that embraced me for 14 years, the country that granted me citizenship.

But I feel so sad that Egypt is no longer safe. Once this country was the safest place in the world with millions of foreign tourists spending their most beautiful times under its warm loving sun or enjoying its golden beaches.

The problem is that after the revolution the prisons were emptied. There now seem to be more criminals than policemen on the streets. I have heard true stories of rape, kidnapping, murder, and many crimes.

One more thing that has frightened me about the new Egypt: extremism. Islamic extremism is growing rapidly in Egypt, this has been notable after the revolution, and more clear after the Muslim Brotherhood?s Mohamed Morsi took office a year ago today.

Gaza is ruled by an Islamic party, but there is no extremism. Gaza is blockaded and frequently attacked by Israel, but the crime level is very low and internal security is near to excellent.

From my heart, I hope that Egypt will be safe like Gaza soon.
